It’s National Hamburger Day, and to us at Urban Butcher, there truly is little better than celebrating the arrival of summer with a big, tasty, juicy burger. When paired with fresh toppings and a mix of classic and unique condiments, and then cooked to perfection on the grill, these summer delicacies really have a way of making our hearts sing. We want you to get creative and try it out for yourself from home, so we sat down with Chef Lance to get some ideas cooking!
What is most important when making a great burger?
One of the best things you can do to ensure you end up with a delicious burger is consider the actual meat you are using. It is best to start with a great cut of meat and have it ground fresh either at home or at your local butcher shop. Using fresh ground meat will really add to the taste and texture of your burger. Additionally, this way you can control how lean or fatty your burger will be and tailor it to suit your personal needs.
Can you use meat other than ground beef to make a great burger?
Of course you can, and in fact, we highly recommend experimenting with other types of meat to put a unique spin on your homemade burger. For me personally, Bison is a great meat to use for burgers. Aside from the nutritional advantages that Bison provides, the taste is phenomenal when cooked properly.
What unexpected or interesting things can you put into the meat mix?
I find that using fresh, local produce is a great way to enhance any burger. What I’ll often do is dice up some onions, garlic, and tomatoes, sauté them, and then add this into the mix before I make the burger patties. Sautéing the veggies helps break down their natural sugars and enhance their flavors, but just make sure you cool them down before adding them to the ground meat mix.
What fresh toppings and condiments could you throw on a burger to make it stand out?
At Urban Butcher, one of our favorite recipes to make is a 100% Ground Bison Burger. With this, we would suggest throwing on some fresh avocado, grilled red onion, and butter leaf lettuce for the fresh toppings. To take your burger to the next level, we would also recommend adding some CRMR Whiskey BBQ Sauce and a little bit of CRMR Tomatillo Salsa.
How would you suggest serving burgers at a backyard party or for a large group?
The key to feeding a lot of people is having a build-your-own-burger station! That way, people can create their own burger masterpiece and personalize it to their tastes as the burgers are fresh off the grill. All you need to do is prepare the fresh toppings ahead of time and lay them out with a selection of classic and unique condiments so that your guests will enjoy experimenting with burger toppings.
